Park Amphitheatre Renovation
|
|
This beautiful al fresco
facility, the country's first municipally owned and operated theater,
was sensitively renovated for today's performance requirements,
while maintaining the integrity, intimacy and community associations
of the facility.
In order to maximize
views of the natural setting, the new roof of the Evans Amphitheater
forms a simple covering plane high over the audience and stage;
its shape likewise preserves two existing brick pylons which frame
the stage. The roof structure supports scenery and lighting loads
over the stage, as well as catwalks and a control booth. Skylights
provide natural lighting in the seating area.

The stage floor was completely
rebuilt, incorporating a waterproof piano storage area underneath it.
The orchestra pit was modified and enlarged. The orchestra floor was reraked
and the original wooden benches were replaced with modern seats whose
color and detailing recalled the original furnishings.
The roof of the Alma
Theater was repaired and expanded with sloping wing extensions.
The facility now has retractable canvas drops which form its side
"walls," ceiling fans, and a louvered back wall for air
circulation. Improvements such as new catwalks, a new air-conditioned
control room, updated sound system, new lighting, and renovated
dressing rooms brought the theater up to present-day standards.
