Projects: The
Callahan Center for Radiation Oncology and Robotics
"The Callahan Center
is a unique environment dedicated to the exploration of new computer-intensive
technologic initiatives for the treatment of cancer and related
conditions.
A New Vision The tremendous
advances in high-speed computing and three-dimensional medical imaging
studies (CT and MRI) have now opened the door to a new vision of
cancer therapy: a vision in which tumors will be imaged, tracked,
and destroyed by high-energy beam therapies based on "real-time"
computer vision targeting and "smart beam" trajectory
corrections. As this vision of cancer medicine matures, it is likely
that some selected types of traditional "radical" cancer
surgeries will be replaced by Computer-Assisted Minimally Invasive
Alternatives to Conventional Surgery (CAMIACS) approaches based
on precision radiotherapy. The Cleveland Clinic Foundation is an
acknowledged leader in the general field of minimally invasive surgery.

The Callahan Center At the
Callahan Center, physicians and medical support personnel work closely
with scientists and engineers to explore the latest advances in computer-assisted
radiation treatments. The Center is housed in a new 2-floor pavilion and
is connected directly with the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center's Department
of Radiation Oncology, the largest and most technologically advanced radiotherapy
facility in Ohio. With the addition of the expanded facilities available
in the Callahan Center, the Department has taken its place as one of the
most advanced clinical oncology centers in the world. New biophysical
approaches to the treatment of brain tumors, breast cancer, gynecologic
malignancies, musculoskeletal tumors, prostate cancer, lymphomas and several
other major tumor types are all being pioneered.

A Collaborative Approach
One of the centerpieces of the new Callahan Center program is the
initiative in Robotic Oncology and image-directed therapy. This
program represents a collaboration linking cancer specialists for
the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and robotics experts from the world-renowned
engineering programs based at Case Western Reserve University and
Ohio State University. The collaboration offers a unique opportunity
to explore the introduction of robotics, automation and artificial
intelligence into clinical oncology."
