Clinic The program was a private
clinic for a well-known plastic surgeon on a one-acre, triangular lot.
Required were two surgeries with support areas, staff space, and separate
rooms and traffic patterns for two types of patients: first time and surgery
patients. The triangular site dictated
the buildings "L" shape. A playful grouping of sculptured, geometric
forms with curved and angled metal surfaces, windows, and skylights invites
visual interest and gives the building a distinct presence in its office
building context. Areas facing the rear and side parking lots are squared-off
and designed with minimal windows to ensure privacy. Support spaces for the building's
core, around which activity circulates. Clinical and waiting rooms and
traffic patterns facilitate and separate surgical and first-time patient
procedures. The doctor's office is distinguished as a soft, elliptical
shape. Lighting in the office consists of ambient down lights, recessed
fluorescent lighting, halogen ambient up-lighting, natural light from
clear, insulated skylight glass, and diffused natural light from glass
block. As glare-free as possible, the resulting mixture provides optimum
examining conditions. Subdued lighting in the three-bed, post-operative
area serves a similar function. Generous natural lighting is provided
throughout the clinic spaces; an entrance at the rear ensures privacy.
