Projects:
Meridia Hillcrest Hospital
Medical Center
Meridia
Hillcrest Hospital serves a large portion of eastern Cuyahoga, Lake
and Geauga counties. The program was an expansion of the complex
to meet the growing demands for outpatient services. The project
included the construction of a medical office building, hospital
expansion including laboratory/emergency room building, pedestrian
link and parking garage. Renovations were conceived to locate all
main departments serving outpatients in close proximity to each
other on one floor. These include Central Sterile Supply, Ambulatory
Surgery Center, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Pre-admission
Testing and Radiology, staff offices and lockers. This arrangement
provides for an efficient working environment and increases the
quality of patient care and satisfaction.

The new buildings are arranged
to allow each outpatient department to be organized about a central atrium
which also serves the medical office building. The future pedestrian bridge
and the link between the Emergency Room/Lab Building and the existing
hospital form a main artery for hospital personnel, facilitating efficient
access from the parking garage to the lab, the M.O.B., the hospital surgery
center, emergency department and bed tower.

|
The
structure of the M.O.B. was determined after extensive study of
bay sizes in order to maximize flexibility for the lease spaces.
Each medical department is open-ended in planning, facilitating
unencumbered future expansion. Equally important to the design of
the M.O.B. was a welcoming atmosphere for patients. The M.O.B. atrium
is in essence a “community living room” as well as the new main
entrance to the medical center. This glass enclosure allows the
space to be highly visible from Mayfield Road, acting as a beacon/landmark.
The open area provides ample space for visitors, outpatients and
staff, in addition to flexible areas for a variety of hospital and
public functions; for example, exhibitions on preventive health
and other topics, art exhibitions, concerts or celebratory events.
|
(The room can seat 400.) With
a backdrop provided by the glazed west wall, the second floor bridge extends
into the atrium space, defining the entry to an intimate food court with
shade-producing trees and casual, cafe-style seating. Natural light is
controlled by fritt glass panels, which cut down on sun load while allowing
for sufficient illumination.
