Projects:
Oberlin Public Library
All of this was to be
accomplished for a building budget of approximately $70 per sq. ft.
and a furniture and equipment budget of $300,000. While the existing buff
brick skin remained, the building was radically transformed through
the introduction of new fenestration, as well as small additions identifying
the entry, community room, and reading garden. These pieces were finished
in contrasting masonry to intensify the "newness" of the
building.
Supplementary functions
- a children's meeting room, art room, community room and special
collections room - are located around the perimeter of the large space.
This arrangement creates a strong spatial image but also guarantees
effective visual supervision. The community room and toilets can be
separated from the library for use after hours. The library is set
up ultimately to incorporate on-line computerized card cataloguing
capabilities. Publication: CONTRACT DESIGN, "Food for Thought,"
