Building
The Cleveland Clinic
The
project involved remodeling of the existing two-story
Packard Motor Car Building and a new five-story addition,
which was to connect to the remodeled building on the
first and second floors. Linkage to the medical complex
across the street would be via pedestrian bridge.
Because of
adjacent building foundations and underground utilities
near the property line, the perimeter of the building
was cantilevered. The glass and aluminum curtain wall
minimizes excess weight at the end of the cantilevers;
Indiana limestone at the base and attic levels complements
the adjacent former Packard facility.
The interior
was designed to be as flexible as possible for various
specialized laboratory requirements. Perimeter circulation
and internal labs define the basic internal organization.
The lab system is modular; benches and corresponding services
are spaced 10'-6" or 21'-0" apart.

Each utility service
module provides methane gas, electricity, hot and cold water,
deionized water, compressed air, and vacuum. Walls and partitions
were constructed where necessary for privacy, noise control,
or environmental control.

Otherwise
the open lab concept was applied. The furniture is modular
and flexible for various space configurations as procedures,
equipment, personnel and programs are modified.

HEALTH SCIENCES
CENTER
The Cleveland Clinic
In
1999 van Dijk, Pace, Westlake Architects in association
with Cesar Pelli Associates completed the 500,000 square
foot, $80,000,000 Health Sciences Center at the Cleveland
Clinic Foundation. Elements in which van Dijk Pace Westlake
was instrumental included the master planning for the
150,000 square feet of laboratories, educational administration,
education labs, and conference center. The goal of the
Health Sciences Center team was to create a building that
was more than a collection of building programs but rather
a place for scholarly interaction.
