Hathaway Brown Middle School

vDPW was challenged with the creation of an addition to the Hathaway Brown Middle School, built in 1927, that was sensitive to the original design of the building, while applying the schools progressive persona to the new facility.

The resulting addition was a collaboration by noted firm Graham Gund Architects and Van Dijk Pace Westlake Architects.  It overcame the initial design challenge by incorporating materials that were consistent with the original Walker and Weeks structure including brick and cast stone facades and a slate roof.  In order to capitalize on the new addition's potential ability to enhance the overall image of the campus, a new entry drive was created, which also improved traffic flow.

In addition to aesthetic improvements, the new addition provides Hathaway Brown with new middle school classrooms (5th to 8th grades), a new dining room and kitchen, and science labs for the upper school (9th to 12th grades).

A focal point of the new addition was the inclusion of a central atrium, which created many unique conditions that required engineers and architects to work closely together.   The sweeping glass curved roof encloses a three story great hall that is flanked on all sides by classrooms that face into it.

This creates a front porch effect, opening out into a central environment in which to interact, or circulate from class to class.
