As a
major innovator in the field of cardiovascular care, the client
required a dramatic increase in the facilities available for both
surgical procedures and post-operative care, specifically intensive
care units. This vast medical organization encompasses outpatient
clinics, a hospital, physicians' educational facilities, and research
facilities, housed in numerous buildings. The new structure was
planned in the form of an addition to the existing hospital, creating
the need for the addition to complement the existing structure.
The facility was designed
with an emphasis on state-of-the-art cardiovascular care, which

evident
in the unusually high percentage of intensive care beds.
The intensive care units were brought out to the perimeter of the
building, where natural light is available. Each surgery is outfitted
with a blood conditioning system to monitor patients, and aid in
reducing trauma. The various monitoring systems are enclosed in
pedestals, to allow staff to circulate efficiently. In addition,
an experimental surgery housing an Argon Laser was designed to aid
in the research and development of this state-of-the-art tool.
